Croquet 2012 April 28, 2012 SJC vs. USNA
How can you not agree that Croquet is quite the 'lawn game'. In fact, Wimbleton used to have as many croquet courts as tennis courts and soon tennis took off leaving croquet 'the underdog' Well let's not have this happen in Annapolis and keep this annual event as lively as ever. I was introduced to the annual SJC vs. USNA Croquet match last year when I saw this parade of highly dressed e.g. victorian style adorned with hats walking past the Inn towards the campus of St. John's. An undergrad acquaintance, Sophie, stopped by and said, 'Aren't you coming?!'. Unfortuantely, I couldn't leave the Inn, but that night at Galway Bay we saw 'Johnnies' dressed up as 'MIds' and thought what a great rivalry. Unfortunately, the next day we saw the aftermath on the lawn. Wow, what happened? Well, it was an example of The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft a-gley.--Robert Burns , (Popularly misquoted as: The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray, or The best laid plans of mice and men go oft astray. but I digress!) The point is, what started as an audience of 300 grew to an uninhibited audience of 3000, alcohol in tow, so it had to be managed differently this year. So, simple request is that you buy alcohol at the event and don't bring it in. There are other kind requests on their website Croquet 2012 . I hope our guests are fortunate to participate in this year's event and leave with memories of croquet being 'quite the lawn game' and I trust they will have as lively a time as ever!
