USNA Parents Weekend
Nothing comes close to demonstrating the ‘comfort of home’ a Bed & Breakfast offers like sharing it with Naval Academy parents for the first time. It seems like Plebe Summer comes up so quickly after a wonderful graduation with Blue Angel flyovers and festivities. We welcome parents to our Bed & Breakfast with reassurance that the Academy is 3 blocks away, and a comfortable room is ready for their plebe to have a good night’s sleep prior I-day. Their special break of dawn breakfast request is taken, and the family spends their night together playing scrabble or just watching a movie in their room from our expansive DVD library. After the ‘drop off’, lunch suggestions are made and we assist in acclimating the parents to the historic Naval Academy surroundings and the town of Annapolis. First stop next day, to get their minds off their child, is the Visitors Center and Discover Tour Trolley Ride. The ‘must see’ is the panoramic view that the World War II Memorial offers of the Naval Academy campus. We were fortunate this year to have the same parents come back for Parents Weekend so that we could share their experience and relief of seeing their child bursting with stories to tell or perhaps just a bittersweet hug or two. (Even to me!) It also increases our knowledge of the traditions, academic life and unique atmosphere of the Naval Academy from their perspective. And what better reassurance to give a parent, is ‘that I am just 3 blocks and a phone call away’ from your precious child. I love my job!
